Homemade vanilla extract

Homemade vanilla extract is cheaper, healthier and much tastier than the industrialised version. And it’s so easy to do!

5 vanilla pods
250 ml vodka

  1. Open the vanilla pods in half, lengthwise. Place them in a clean bottle, cover with vodka and close with the lid.
  2. Leave the vanilla to infuse for at least a month, in a cool, dark place, shaking the bottle from time to time.
  3. In the end, if you want a vanilla extract without residues you can strain it with a coffee filter to eliminate the small seeds. As you use the extract you can fill it with more vodka. Eventually, all the vanilla flavor will be extracted, so you can also add new pods.
  4. Note that the vanilla extract will have a darker color once done. This photo was taken after just one week, in order to capture the images of the vanilla pods inside the liquid.

É bem verdade, nunca mais voltei a comprar baunilhadas sintetizadas ou industriais depois de ter feito o meu primeiro extracto. Ao contrário de ti, eu não faço com vodka – acho q os meus tempos de me achar uma veradeira princesa Russa já lá vão, ohohoh – mas sim com rum, dourado de preferência – agora devo ser princesa pirata, ahahahah. Faz uma diferença brutal, usar um extracto caseiro, mesmo, e isto rende imenso, vale bem a pena e compensa o preço assustador das vagens. Tb faço açucar baunilhado, apesar de quase n usar açucar gosto de ter para p vezes deitar num yogurte, ou mm nos bolos.
